it was our time
mom called me on the phone weeks ago to make sure i was keeping up with the protests that were happening throughout southwestern cities, concerning immigration reform. "is storm lake doing anything like this?" not at the time, i told her. well, we had our time-- friday at 11:30-- almost 100 students from storm lake high school, about 10 students from bvu, and some adults and members of the greater storm lake community all marched from the high school to senator steve king's office on the main drag of town to protest hr4437. "si, se puede" was a common chant as well as "say no to what? hr4437! say yes to what? dream act!" the leadership of the students was amazing. most of them were hispanic, but there was representation from other backgrounds, as well, which only strengthened our position. we were all in support of exactly what the man in this pic had peacefully requested: "fair, just and compassionate immigration laws!" it was our time, that's no doubt. whether or not it made a difference, we'll see. may 1st is coming up which means another push toward what we will continue standing up for and speaking out about. "si se puede!"
